Pay pass technology. Sberbank contactless cards: pros and cons. Visa contactless payment technology

Plastic cards have long been part of our lives. A small, convenient payment instrument that is accepted almost anywhere in the world. In addition, it is very safe. You must always remember the PIN code and make sure that the card is not lost, otherwise the attackers will find out the CVV and, for example, pay for purchases in an online store. But there is an alternative solution - PayPass. What it is and how to use this tool, you will learn from this article.

Definition

PayPass is a contactless payment technology with MasterCard. To pay, it is enough to attach a card with a microprocessor to the terminal. This is the PayPass technology. In fact, the card is a microcircuit with an antenna. In Taiwan, the United States, Spain and Turkey, the MasterCard PayPass microprocessor is embedded in watches, mobile phones and other items that a person carries with him daily.

This secure allows you to easily, quickly and safely carry out small purchases. Now, during the payment, there is no need to suffer with banknotes, swipe the card through the terminal, sign checks. The user just needs to touch a special terminal. PayPass technology is very useful in the field of trading goods with low value and high transaction frequency. But for its widespread development in the future, it is necessary to strengthen the security of operations.

History of development

In 2003, MasterCard tested contactless technology for 9 months in Orlando and Florida. At 60 different points, users paid with 16,000 cards. In parallel, the company worked on its compatibility with Nokia, JPMorgan, AT&T to implement PayPass in mobile phones. In 2008, the 50 millionth device was released. By this point, 77% of users were using contactless technology as their primary means of payment. By 2010, PayPass was launched in Bulgaria and Slovakia, users had 75 million cards in their hands, which were accepted in 230,000 terminals. According to the company's financial report for 2012, the volume of issuance increased by 50% due to the growth in the number of users throughout Europe. Today, PayPass cards are issued by Sberbank of Russia and Privat in Ukraine.

The potential of PayPass has not yet been discovered

What does it mean? Contactless transactions benefit all market participants: consumers, merchants and banks. Financial institutions provide their customers with more issuers - an increase in the loyalty of account holders to card programs. This technology can complement any credit, debit, co-branding and other programs.

Merchants that have a PayPass terminal installed can serve their customers at a higher level. Reducing the number of transactions speeds up the checkout process and makes it more efficient. The first major business to use MasterCard PayPass is McDonald's. Soon footballers and golfers became interested in the new technology. The contactless system is now used in turnstiles, vending machines, etc.

PayPass: where they accept and issue in Russia

The first contactless payment in the Russian Federation was carried out on September 9, 2008 in the Moscow restaurant Five Stars. The first PayPass card was issued by the Industrial Bank in 2010. It is planned to issue a separate circulation of cards for students and teachers. They can be used not only for their intended purpose, but also as a record book and student card.

Since 2011, a card with a magnetic stripe and a microchip has been issued by Raiffeisenbank. It is given to customers free of charge as part of the Premium package. But for use you need to have from 2 million rubles. or 1 million if you spend more than 25 thousand rubles per month. Customers who do not comply with this condition will pay 3,000 rubles per month.

Analogues in the world

Contactless technologies also exist in the Visa system. PayWare is an analogue of PayPass. What does it mean? Visa and JCB Co. Ltd. entered into an agreement to adopt the development of MasterCard as a single protocol, that is, all contactless technologies will be tested according to the same scheme, ensuring compatibility of all brands.

The main advantages of contactless payments:

  • modern calculation method;
  • universal means of payment - such a bank card can be used not only on new devices, but also in numerous ATMs and terminals;
  • long service life;
  • high speed of payment;
  • fraud protection.

But there is one big drawback - the lack of a developed infrastructure, the cost of which is so high that neither banks nor trade enterprises are in a hurry to invest in it. In the UK, only 10% of stores installed terminals in 3 years.

PayPass: how to use

Due to the presence of a special chip, contactless cards can make small payments without authentication by the holder. Such transactions are limited to 15 dollars in the US, 50 zlotys in Poland, 10 pounds in the UK, 1000 rubles - in Russia. Operations for large amounts will have to be confirmed by signing a check or entering a PIN code. But not all banks allow it. For example, in Germany and Austria, if the limit is exceeded, payment will have to be made by the usual contact method.

MasterCard issues debit and credit PayPass. How to use a contactless chip?

After each transaction, the amount is debited from a bank or personal account. Since the connection is contactless, instead of a card, you can use a key fob with an RFID sticker, a smartphone with NFC, etc. Goods can only be paid for at outlets with the PayWave Visa, PayPass logo. The terminal confirms the reading procedure with a sound signal. The user does not have to transfer the card to the wrong hands, enter a PIN code, or sign a check. It is enough to bring a wallet with a card to the terminal. There must be no other plastic media with a chip inside. In Germany, they are also installed on identity cards.

Safety

Contactless transactions significantly reduce time. But in terms of security, users have a lot of questions. The RFID chip can partially remotely clone cards at a distance of up to 2 cm. This fact calls into question the complete contactlessness of use.

PayPass prevents direct reading from RFID. The chip contains information about the number and expiration date of the card, and this is not enough for online transactions. A one-time code is generated for each operation. If you count it until the moment the card is used, then you can create its clone. The first application of the code by the duplicate will be approved, and repeated by the original will block both media. Given the low transaction limits, card cloning is not profitable.

It will not be possible to perform many operations from a mobile terminal. In areas with a large population, data on such transactions should be sent to an authorized center so that outsiders cannot use the card unauthorized. Such systems analyze each generated code and check it for a duplicate. To fully protect information, you need to shield the card, for example, wrap it in foil.

Where to use MasterCard Mobile PayPass technology

There are many “contactless” points in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other large cities of Russia: supermarkets, cafes, restaurants, pharmacies, gas stations, beauty salons and other similar establishments. In addition, some organizations hold promotions for users of PayPass technology. For example, in the northern capital, by the end of February, paying for an order in your favorite cafe using a smartphone, you can get coffee as a gift.

And for some, the emergence of contactless cards has become something unimaginable. In fact, contactless payment cards were back in 2002, but in testing mode, and only now Visa and MasterCard, having tested wireless payment technology over the years and setting security standards, have introduced contactless payment cards for general use.

Sberbank contactless card- this is the same bank card that provides the opportunity to pay through the terminal with one touch of the card to the terminal, currently within the limit of 1000 rubles. For a more expensive purchase, you need to enter the PIN code of the card. This technology is called Pay Pass and it is convenient and safe.

A contactless payment card is equipped with a special RFID antenna (radio antenna), with the help of which payment is made. Through this antenna, information about the owner is read from the card and transmitted via a secure channel to the bank, where the transaction is already being carried out.

How to use a contactless Sberbank card

The card can be used at all updated POS terminals (usually marked with a wireless payment icon). They are now almost everywhere.

To pay for the purchase, just bring the card to the terminal. It is not necessary to insert it into the receiver, the pin code must be entered only in case of payment in the amount of more than 1000 rubles, in the case of a smaller amount, the pin code is not required.

The process of paying with a contactless card consists of three steps:

  • Bring the payment card close to the terminal or at a distance of 0.5 - 1 cm
  • Fix the card in this position for a couple of seconds
  • After the notification of successful payment appears on the terminal screen, the card can be removed

If the POS-terminal of the previous generation does not support the card, then payment is made as a regular card.

Sberbank contactless cards pros and cons

  • Convenience of payment. The card does not need to be taken out of the wallet and inserted into the terminal, it is enough just to attach it for a couple of seconds and the purchase is made. It saves a lot of time, especially when shopping.
  • card longevity. Since the card is not constantly inserted into the terminal receiver, physical contact of the card is eliminated and this increases the life of the card.
  • Payment security. The risks of stealing money from the account by intruders are excluded.

As for the owners of outlets, some complain about the high cost of POS-terminals with support for contactless cards. As the saying goes, all good things come with a price. In this case, you will have to pay for the convenience of buyers.

Security of contactless MasterCard Pay Pass cards

It would be nice to think about the security of payments with contactless cards. Contactless payment technology has several levels of protection.

  • The range of data transmission via NFC is only a few centimeters, so during the operation the reader must be placed close to the card, which is quite difficult to do unnoticed.
  • There is another level of protection - limiting the maximum amount of a contactless transaction: 1000 rubles. The limit of 1000 rubles without PIN is the recommendation of Visa and Mastercard in Russia. Payment for a larger amount will be rejected or require additional confirmation (signature, PIN). When you try to consistently withdraw several amounts below the threshold, the additional protection system is also triggered.
  • Next, you need to overcome more serious protection based on cryptography. The reading terminal must have cryptographic keys obtained from the acquiring bank and the payment system. Such keys are issued exclusively under an agreement with the bank that issued the card.

All this provides comprehensive protection and security of operations.

Today, Sberbank can offer you the following bank cards with contactless payment technology for goods and services:

The world's first market testing of MasterCard contactless technology began in 2003, in 2005 the novelty began to actively penetrate the markets and gain popularity. History of MasterCard paypass in Russia began in 2008, when a new payment method was first demonstrated in our country, and its distribution gradually began - the first contactless cards appeared, merchants accepting this type of payment.

▪ 2011

It became possible to purchase a one-touch ticket at Aeroexpress ticket offices and vending machines, contactless terminals appeared in Gastronome No. 1, GUM boutiques, etc.

▪ 2012

The first solution for mobile contactless payment in Russia appeared - MasterCard and MTS launched a joint project. A convenient and fast payment method was actively conquering the market - in the same year, payment using contactless technology became possible in parking lots, gas stations, cafe chains, cinemas.

▪ 2013

The contactless payment method is available at Moscow metro ticket machines, on several bus routes in the Moscow region, and at Aeroexpress turnstiles. Banks are starting to issue contactless MasterCard cards in new form factors: watches and stickers. In the same year, all leading Russian mobile operators offer solutions for mobile contactless payment. The first mobile wallet has been released, allowing you to remotely issue and download a card to your smartphone “over the air”.

▪ 2013: Universiade in Kazan

The Summer Universiade in Kazan had a significant impact on the spread of cashless payments and contactless technologies. Especially for this large-scale event, a multi-service contactless MasterCard card was issued: in addition to payment functionality, this card was a pass to sports facilities, a public transport pass, an identity card for fans and volunteers, and a card in the loyalty program. With this card it was possible to buy tickets, "register" them in the electronic system, and no longer use paper tickets: at the stadium, you just had to touch the card to the reader at the entrance. At the same time, the first cards for fans of sports clubs appeared on MasterCard contactless bank cards - their functionality includes discounts on the purchase of goods in specialized club stores, and the ability to purchase and record season tickets or tickets for games, so that later you can go to the stadium "with one touch" .

▪ 2014

This year brings new form factors in the form of key chains and wearable bracelets. By the way, more than 30 thousand guests of the Alfa Future People festival used the bracelets, which, with the support of MasterCard, became the first music festival in Russia, the entire territory of which was a cash-free zone.

MasterCard PayPass technology is becoming more and more widely used and gaining a new sound in social projects implemented with its use - a new generation of Muscovite social cards is issued on contactless MasterCard cards, and in Tatarstan the School Card project is being implemented - a new one has been created in it using MasterCard contactless technology school environment: from attendance checks to school meal planning. Multiservice cards and electronic bracelets with a contactless chip were issued to schoolchildren, who thus learn the basics of financial literacy.

▪ 2015

A number of projects are being implemented to introduce MasterCard contactless technology in transport. A large-scale project started in January in the St. Petersburg metro: one-touch fares can be paid at all stations directly at the turnstiles. Ground routes also appeared in Moscow and the northern capital - buses and trams are equipped with contactless readers.

MasterCard technology, due to its ease of use and the ability to integrate with a variety of wearable devices, is becoming increasingly famous and popular. By 2020, support for contactless payment will become the MasterCard standard for European service and merchant enterprises, consumers will be able to pay with contactless cards and devices at all POS terminals in Europe.

MasterCard Mobile PayPass - and here NFC

Almost every one of us has used infrared and Bluetooth technologies at least once, for example, transferring music from phone to phone at an institute lecture or, on a larger scale, deploying a data transmission network as part of some event taking place in a closed space using technology Bluetooth low energy. Many are already familiar with another near field communication technology - NFC (near field communication, near contactless communication). This is a wireless high-frequency communication technology that allows devices to exchange data at a very small distance of about 10 cm (compare with Bluetooth - up to 10 m). NFC is widely used in payments, access control systems, event pass wristbands, and more. Today, this technology is spreading in smartphones, TVs, and in the tourism industry.

NFC has played a key role in the development of contactless payments. The technology formed the basis of contactless payment. This is because NFC is reliable and easy to deploy. Contactless NFC chips store and exchange data with special readers, such as validators at turnstiles or POS terminals at store checkouts. Validators and terminals authorize the chip and exchange data at high speed. In addition, one of the NFC functions is to work in the bank card emulation mode.

MasterCard contactless payment technology is a special case of using NFC. See the infographic for details:

The most important feature that makes NFC an invaluable technology for use in mobile contactless transactions is the minimum connection establishment time, less than a second. That is, it is enough to bring the device with the NFC chip to the payment terminal and the payment will be made almost instantly.

The NFC chip can be installed in any device: from bank cards and mobile devices to watches and smartphones.

The advantages of MasterCard Mobile PayPass are obvious:

  • Easy to store, carry and use. Just touch the MasterCard device paypass to the reading terminal at the checkout and the purchase is paid. If the purchase amount does not exceed 1000 rubles, you do not need to enter a PIN code or sign a receipt.
  • Secure payments due to the short communication distance and maximum connection speed: fraudsters need to make incredible efforts to intercept data and hack.
  • Money for one purchase will not be written off twice: after the first payment has passed, the terminal at the checkout beeps and turns off.
  • Purchase speed - instant connection and data exchange significantly save time on paying for goods and services.
  • Widespread use in service terminals (in buses, metro, social cards, etc.) allows users to pay for services conveniently and quickly.
  • The prevalence, ease of implementation and support by many devices of NFC technology allows you to quickly expand the scope of MasterCard PayPass technology and create convenient payment points in stores, cafes, gas stations, cinemas, etc.

Through a combination of unique technologies, MasterCard paypass can make almost any item you like a means of payment.

Phone and wallet

Smartphones in modern society have long ceased to be a means of communication: now it is the Internet, books, music, work, study, maps and navigation, photos and mail, which are always with you. A person can forget a plastic card, wallet, glasses and keys, but he will check the presence of a phone in his pocket several times before leaving - after all, without it, it’s like without hands. Of course, the decision to make the smartphone also a means of payment was obvious. Moreover, NFC technology is extremely convenient for use in mobile devices and there are many smartphones and tablets with NFC “on board” in the world. How exactly your smartphone turns into a payment instrument can be found on the website.

Over the past year, contactless MasterCard technology has appeared in smartphones with support for a number of payment platforms.

▪ Apple Pay- a payment system integrated into Apple devices and introduced on September 9, 2014. Apple device owners can use MasterCard credit and debit cards directly with Apple Pay. In the store, to confirm the payment, it is enough to bring the iPhone to the contactless reader of the payment terminal and at the same time touch the Touch ID scanner with your finger (a step towards biometric identification). Security is provided by the EMV (Europay, MasterCard, Visa) standard and the use of the MDES (MasterCard Digital Enablement Service) platform.

▪ Samsung Pay. MasterCard cardholders can use their smartphones (flagship models such as the Samsung Galaxy S6) as a mobile payment device. The security and convenience of payments is ensured by the tokenization mechanism, the use of the MDES platform, as well as the EMV cryptographic algorithm.

▪ Android Pay announced and still preparing for release, but Android Pay and MasterCard have already been implemented paypass, based on the same tokenization mechanism. The real number of the user's card is not transmitted, so the consumer is provided with an additional level of security. The solution will soon be available for users of devices with Android KitKat and above.

▪ Wallet. A project related to MasterCard technology and mobile payments is being developed in Russia. In 2014, MasterCard and CardsMobile introduced new features of the Wallet mobile app. "Wallet" is available for download on more than 100 phone models due to cloud-based NFC technology.

The Wallet mobile app allows owners of compatible Android smartphones to issue, securely store and use MasterCard PayPass mobile bank cards for payments in online and offline stores, transport cards for public transport fares and electronic discount coupons directly in the app. During the payment process, the user only needs to attach his smartphone with the Wallet application installed to the contactless payment terminal.

One of the key innovations is the launch of the "cloud" version of the Wallet, previously available only in a pre-installed form. Today, you can download a virtual contactless card from Tinkoff Bank, Russian Standard and Bank Saint Petersburg to your phone “over the air” without visiting the bank using the Wallet. Bank cards" from CardsMobile for Samsung, HTC, LG, Nexus, Sony, Huawei, OnePlus with Android 4.4 KitKat operating system and higher. The app can be downloaded for free from Google.Play.

But are users ready for this?

Even now, watching the payment process in a hypermarket or at communication payment terminals, one can see that the transition to paperless money circulation in Russia is not going fast - many, even young people, prefer to carry banknotes and coins in their pockets, and shops periodically hang out signs with already a little annoying "Card Not Accepted" announcement. So are we ready to meet the future that is already here?

According to one interesting study, yes, we are.

PRIME Research conducted its third annual Mobile Payments Study to uncover the changing consumer attitudes towards digital payments and mobile solutions. More than 19 million 100 thousand social media comments were analyzed in 2014 in sources such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Weibo (China), Google+, YouTube and forums. The study covered consumers in 56 markets across the Americas, Europe (including Russia), Africa, Asia and the Pacific and identified more than 8 million conversations on these topics, including consumer commentary and news discussions.

The results of the study were announced in the spring of 2015. They show not only a significant increase in the number of discussions, but also a change in their tone and focus - there are more positive comments. Here are some of the findings from the study.

  • Attitudes towards digital payments continue to improve. In 2014, 94% of discussions on the topic worldwide were positive, compared to 77% in 2013 and 70% in 2012.
  • Most of the positive discussions are devoted to innovations, privileges and bonuses, as well as the convenience of mobile payments (91% of messages on these topics are positive).
  • Payment security is one of the top topics in terms of the number of positive messages
  • Consumers spoke favorably about the security of payments in 91% of cases. In 2012, this topic caused the most negativity.
  • The misunderstanding and doubts about the security of payments, recorded in the studies of 2012 and 2013, have been replaced by positive feedback.
  • Tokenization and biometric technologies, key topics of discussion in 2014, played a significant role in changing consumer sentiment.
  • The focus has shifted to the benefits of innovation in mobile payments.
  • While payment security was discussed most positively, there were few such discussions.
  • Conversations about digital innovation and new opportunities for users offered by mobile and other Internet-connected devices were the most popular among interested participants in 2014 (71% of discussions are devoted to them).
  • The convenience of mobile payments has become the most popular topic of positive messages (94% of reviews are positive). Users were most enthusiastic about specific purchases made using mobile devices on social media, and especially about how they made everyday purchases.
  • In addition to convenience, when discussing innovations in mobile payments, users also often mentioned bonuses such as coupons, loyalty programs and points (24% of comments from all stakeholders). Mobile payment becomes more attractive if additional privileges are provided (58% of conversations on this topic were initiated by consumers).

Clearly, users around the world are ripe for new payment options. In turn, payment systems and technologies have a future that can be looked at with bold optimism and confidence in being in demand.

Glossary of technologies

Two abbreviations were used in the post, which hide not only technologies, but also guarantee the security of fast contactless payments. Let's talk about them briefly.

MDES (MasterCard Digital Enablement Service) is a platform that turns any device into a payment instrument: it allows you to use any device with an Internet connection to make and receive payments. When making payments, the platform uses tokens - one-time combinations of numbers that are used on mobile devices instead of 16-digit numbers on plastic cards. MDES confirms the transaction, matches the token with the plastic card number and sends this information to the issuing bank to authorize the payment on its part. In case of fraud or loss of the payment device, the connection between the token and the card in the MDES platform is broken.

EMV (Europay, MasterCard, Visa)- an international standard for transactions with bank cards with a chip. This standard was developed by the joint efforts of bank card providers to increase the level of transaction security.

MasterCard has been a driver of innovation for businesses, banks and end users throughout its history. Contactless technology is a solution that is simultaneously convenient for all market participants, safe and easy to scale.

More than 5 million MasterCard PayPass cards have already been issued in Russia. More than 3 million trading platforms in 68 countries of the world accept payments using MasterCard PayPass technology (38 countries in Europe).

The future has arrived. All that was left was to touch it.

The global trend in innovation is paypass contactless payment technology. This feature simplifies the transfer of funds through the use of a bank card by the buyer to the seller, making the process instant and very convenient. "Plastic" can not even be taken out of a jacket pocket by touching it to the POS-terminal and making a one-touch payment for the purchase. The younger generation of citizens - holders of bank cards - prefers a financial instrument because of its progressiveness.

What are contactless payments

The one-touch payment method that does not involve physical interaction between the “plastic” holder and the POS-terminal (point of sale, an electronic technical device for accepting a bank card with a microchip or magnetic stripe for payment) is called contactless payment . The operation is as simple as possible and takes a minimum of time. To make it, you should attach "plastic" or a smartphone with virtual cards to the POS-terminal.

The two most common contactless transfer technologies today, based on the ISO / IEC 14443 standard (modulation method, RFID - Radio Frequency IDentification short-range data exchange protocol, radio frequency identification):

  1. mastercard paypass;
  2. visa paywave.

How paypass technology works

To support the paypass technology, the MasterCard standard card is equipped with a microchip - a contactless payment module - and a small antenna. The radius of action of the device is 40 - 80 mm. It is enough to make contactless money transfers - the buyer needs to bring his card to the POS-terminal: in a few seconds the device will read the data, the purchase will be instantly paid.

Giant companies Apple and Samsung are busy developing technologies that allow linking contactless "plastic" to the current mobile application. Paypass is supported by devices with a built-in NFC chip - near field communication, the so-called near field communication, short-range wireless data transmission.

NFC technology may be available for use on both types of bank cards: debit and credit. Mobile applications simplify the process of using "plastic", which is supported by the contactless payment system - the success of the transaction is confirmed by the light on the POS-terminal and the corresponding sound signal.

Advantages and disadvantages of contactless payment by bank card

Contactless payment with a plastic card has its pros and cons. Starting with the shortcomings, which by and large are only 3, it should be mentioned that for the full operation of the paypass system, a special POS terminal is required, which must be installed at the outlet of the seller of goods and / or services. Store owners are in no hurry to install expensive devices, avoiding unnecessary expenses. Because of this, the widespread adoption of contactless payment technologies is not progressing as fast as the consumer would like.

The second disadvantage is relative vulnerability. A card equipped with a paypass chip may be the object of fraud. Payment terminals write off, without requesting a pin code, an amount within 1 thousand rubles at a distance of up to 10 m. A hacker, the owner of home-made equipment, for example, an RFID reader (an electronic device for automatic identification of objects that reads and writes data using a high-frequency radio signal), will have 15 minutes in a crowded subway car to go through the cabin and rob several dozen people.

The third drawback can be considered an understated limit on the amount of purchases, which is only 1 thousand rubles. Residents of megacities, who are accustomed to constantly paying for goods and services with a bank card, will face inconvenience during their usual shopping. A check over a thousand rubles will have to be closed by entering a pin code. The advantages of using cards with contactless payment technology are still greater than the disadvantages:

  1. Money is transferred to the seller instantly.
  2. The buyer has the opportunity to pay for a product or service purchased anywhere in the world.
  3. The operation of transferring funds is simplified as much as possible.
  4. The paypass option is usually included in the cost of the annual plastic service.
  5. The risk of fraud with a contactless payment card is recognized as low.

How to protect your paypass card

Banks that issue "plastic" that supports contactless payment technology are trying to secure its use. To correctly use this financial instrument, its owner must follow a number of rules:

  • do not physically contact the cashier - in this case, no manipulations with the client's account can be made;
  • do not release a credit card / debit card;
  • after the interaction of the POS-terminal with the card, funds are not debited twice from the same account - the device will notify the payer by flashing a light and a sound signal about the successful completion of the operation;
  • in case of loss of the card in case of loss, theft - the financial instrument is subject to immediate blocking, the funds are frozen on the first call to the bank or independently through the personal account online.

Disabling the function of contactless payments on a Sberbank card

When carrying out financial transactions, a client account is created, but bank card data is not entered into it. The information is stored on the system server in order to protect the funds of the "plastic" holder. A client of a credit institution can connect to the system for free - the user of the Android Pay application is exempted from paying a commission when making purchases if he uses a contactless Sberbank card.

On discredited "plastic", with which its holder had problems, the paypass option should be disabled. You can do this in two ways:

  • using the entrance to your personal account through the official website of the credit institution;
  • personally visiting the bank office, writing a corresponding application.

In your personal account online

To disable the option through your personal account, a client who owns a Sberbank card with paypass should visit the official portal of a credit institution using a personal computer with Internet access. Go to the bank's website and follow the steps below:

  1. Enter your username and password.
  2. Receive a six-digit confirmation code via SMS. Enter it in the cell of the electronic login form intended for this.
  3. Log in to your personal account. Select the section with the bank card you are interested in.
  4. Prohibit the use of paypass technology for this "plastic".

At a bank branch

You can cancel the use of contactless payment technology for a specific plastic card through a bank branch. Firstly, through the telephone hotline of a financial organization, and secondly, by visiting the office of a credit institution in person:

  • contact a bank employee;
  • tell him about the desire to disable the paypass function;
  • follow the instructions.

Mechanical way to protect the card

The contactless payment function can be disabled mechanically. To do this, wrap the bank card with ordinary foil, preventing the correct operation of the paypass module. A good means of protecting "plastic" with contactless payment technology can be a special case with a metal layer that prevents the device from emitting radio waves and blocking the acceptance of incoming signals.

How to disable NFC in the mobile application

In the quick settings menu, next to the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth symbols, there is an icon with the letter N - just like in the notification panel, there is an NFC signature next to it. To turn off this function, move the slider opposite, bringing it to an inactive position. If you did not find the corresponding item in the quick settings of your phone, open the usual ones. Select the "Wireless Networks" section, click the "File and Data Transfer" tab and move the NFC option slider to the "off" position - the N symbol will disappear from the notification panel.

Delete the application completely

You can disable the contactless payment feature on your phone by deleting the mobile app completely. To do this, select the program icon on the device screen and move it to the trash. Make sure your cart is empty. After performing these actions, the service of contactless payment for goods and / or services via a smartphone will become unavailable.

Temporarily block

You can interrupt the application for a certain period by temporarily blocking it. To do this, you should not delete it entirely. To pause the mobile app, follow these steps:

  1. Select "Settings" from the menu of your smartphone.
  2. Find the "Advanced settings" section and go to it.
  3. Open the Wireless Networks tab.
  4. You can turn off the NFC module by moving the slider opposite so that the application becomes inactive.

Comfortable technology to simplify the procedure of payments with plastic cards was successfully tested in the USA in 2002. Today, PayPass is actively used in the European Union, the USA, Japan, the developing countries of the Asian region and the CIS countries.

PayPass entered the Russian market in 2008, after which the following banks took up the issue of plastic supporting the technology: Citibank, Russian Standard, Petrocommerce, Moscow Industrial Bank, Alfa-Bank, Raiffeisenbank.

paypass card

The PayPass technology is based on the principle of contactless payments based on the MasterCardWordwide product. The key benefits are the simplification and acceleration of the buying process. To conduct a transaction between the buyer and the cashier, it is enough to attach a card that supports PayPass technology to a special terminal and express consent to the transaction. There is no need to take the card out of your wallet, bag, pocket or other storage place. The technology is available for magnetic stripe and chip cards.

PayPass contactless payment

When paying for goods or services with PayPass technology, there is no need to enter a pin code and sign a check during the purchase process. The limit on the purchase amount in force in Russia should not exceed 1000 rubles. The technology is only gaining momentum in Russia against the backdrop of widespread use in Europe. A popular payment method provoked a new round of fraud in the segment of reading information from plastic cards of bank customers.

How to use PayPass

Thanks to PayPass technology, payment for inexpensive services or goods has become possible not only with the use of a plastic card, but also through a key fob, watch, telephone and other devices in which an electronic chip is embedded that is linked to the client's bank account. The most interesting version of the chip is offered in the form of an adhesive sticker, which is conveniently attached to any carrier. The convenience of using PayPass is to save time in the process of everyday payments in a cafe, at a gas station, in a store or public transport.

PayPass chip owners save about 30 hours of time per year thanks to a progressive simplified way of cashless payments.

Payment via PayPass

If PayPass technology is used to pay online, the user will need to enter a special verification code. In POS-terminals that are not equipped with the option to recognize contactless chips, it will be possible to pay with a card in a standard way, using a magnetic stripe or a contact chip. Some experts tend to believe that PayPass technology has certain security problems. Their essence boils down to the fact that advanced in the use of information technology scammers can use readers to write off insignificant amounts from the card remotely without the need to confirm the payment.

Paypass system

Depending on the choice of a commercial bank for cooperation, the status, format, and parameters for using cards with contactless payment technology differ significantly. The difference can be traced not only optionally, but also in the cost of providing services. For example, Citibank is focused on issuing co-branded (joint projects of banks with other companies as part of special programs for a specific target audience) plastic with PayPass, while Alfa-Bank can also issue contactless payment technology.

PayPass terminals

When using PayPass terminals, users include an RFID chip in their technological arsenal. It should be noted that this element does not contain the required set of data, which is sufficient to pay for online purchases, such as a CVC2 code or username. Theoretically, an advanced attacker can read a one-time access code in order to perform one or more operations. But due to the technological complexity, the mentioned method of deception is unlikely to be widely used.

Advice from Sravni.ru: PayPass technology makes life easier for a modern person and saves time. But not too widespread on the territory of the Russian Federation makes a convenient algorithm for paying for purchases inaccessible in a number of areas. If you are in Moscow, St. Petersburg or another major regional center, the possibility of using PayPass is guaranteed not to be superfluous.
